His romantic views are among the best produced in the 19th century, they show nice views of the north eastern states in the 1830's including New York, Boston, Washington D.C., Baltimore, Philadelphia, etc. - Some minor foxing but on the whole a handsome copy of this classic American view book depicting the principal American cities and picturesque views. This uncommon early edition of a collection of American Christian poetry, full bound in the original publisher's gilt-decorated cloth. Undated, but established as being an early edition of the work published circa 1840 using records at the University of Edinburgh Libraries.Illustrated with a monochrome plate frontispiece titled 'Come to Me Ye Broken Hearted&apos.With ten pages of publisher's advertisements at the rear of the work.Uncommon.This is a heartening collection of nineteenth-century Christian poetry. It includes works by significant poets of the day such as John Pierpont, Nathaniel Parker Willis, and George Washington Doane. In the original publisher's full cloth binding. Externally, smart with marginal fading to the fore edge and spine, minor handling marks, and light rubbing. Slight bumping to the head and tail of the spine and the extremities, Internally, sections of the binding are strained. Pages are slightly age toned with the odd spot or small handling mark, including a minor tidemark to the frontispiece and half title page, neither impacting the illustration nor text. The first edition of this work, with engraved title page to each volume. With 67 plates to volume I, including hand coloured map, and 52 plates to volume II. Collated, complete. This work is composed of the steel engravings of English artist Henry Bartlett, drawn from his first visit to America in 1835. These engravings are supplemented by the text of Nathaniel Parker Willis, an American author, poet and editor who worked with several notable American writers including Edgar Allan Poe and Henry Wadsworth Longfellow.Bartlett's plates were originally published in monthly instalments between 1837 and 1839, with bound editions of the work featuring the text of Willis published from 1840 onwards. This is the first of such editions. Plates and descriptions include locations such as Niagara Falls, Yale College, the valley of Wyoming, and numerous others.Identified as first edition from Abbey, 651. With engraved portrait frontispiece of Bartlett to volume I, as called for. In a half calf binding with cloth covered boards. Some rubbing to raised bands and spine head and tail. NY, Clark & Austin, 1848. Reprint. Fair. A preface by the author proclaims that his publishers wanted to print a handsome library edition instead of the cheap, popular. edition of his youth. The author was induced to make a more careful collection of his poems than had yet appeared and this volume is the result. He calls his reputation "too early acquired" and promises to himself more care in what shall occupy the down-hill side of his life. Green binding with elaborate gilt decoration, all edges gilt but book is bowed and has heavy edge wear esp at spine ends.

The first edition of this vanishingly scarce work.Original wraps are bound in. Part of Colman's dramatic library. 'Tortesa the Usurer' is a romantic tragi-comedy, following a love triangle between a usurer, a young daughter of a Count, and a painter. Written in blank verse, this was a popular play for around a decade after its premier in Philadelphia, at the Walnut Street Theatre, on the 20th June 1839.Among this plays admirers was Edgar Allan Poe, who called it "by far the best play from the pen of an American author".Willis was a notable American author of the nineteenth century, writing both prose and poetry. He also worked as an editor, working with various eminent American figures of the day, including Edgar Allan Poe and Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. During his career, he was the highest paid magazine writer. Two pages of adverts to the rear. Rebound in a cloth binding, with the original wraps bound in.
